Elements of the 82nd Airborne ordered closer to Mosul

Reports surfacing earlier today indicate that an unknown number of combat oriented soldiers from the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division have been ordered to move closer to northern Iraq  to support the Iraqi Army’s efforts to retake the ISIS stronghold of Mosul.

According to the Military Times quoting US officials in Baghdad: “Additional members of 2/82 BCT are deploying to Iraq on a non-enduring temporary mission to provide additional ‘advise and assist’ support to our Iraq partners as they liberate Mosul,”

These news don’t come as a surprise as earlier this month a top Army general informed Congress about the projected move and hinted on the spread of personnel between Iraq and Syria.

Those troops will bring the amount of military personnel on the ground supporting the offense against Isis to 10,000 strong, a far cry from the numbers of what is still dubbed by US officials as an “advisory mission”.
