The man charged with intentionally injuring a 3-month-old infant who later died is a Fort Hood soldier, according to Fort Hood spokesman Tyler Broadway.
Zachary Kadetz, 21, is a private first class with the 61st Medical Battalion, 1st Medical Brigade. He is a combat medic specialist.
Kadetz gave police officers several different, inconsistent versions of the story about his son James’ death when they first arrived Feb. 18, according to the affidavit. Eventually, he told police he dropped James while they were alone, then shook him hard, police said.
The baby died in a hospital Feb. 21.
Kadetz told officers that upon his son’s birth, he watched a video that stated what could happen if a baby was shaken, according to the affidavit.
The autopsy report from Dr. Erica Ward indicated James suffered a bruise to his forehead, subdural hemorrhages, a likely wrist fracture, retinal hemorrhages and retinal detachments.
Kadetz is in the Bell County Jail. His bond was set at $1 million by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke.
