A United States Air Force airman was arrested by local police for the attempted murder of a fellow airman at the NATO’s Aviano air base in Italy.

In the attack that took place at around 4 AM Tuesday the 19-year-old airman allegedly stabbed the 21-year-old airman in the throat, face and arms as she was sleeping in the base dormitory, according to police.

The airman only stopped the attack when the woman woke up and began screaming. When he was arrested he stated that he did not know why he attacked the woman who claimed that she haven’t met the airman before.

She was given first-aid by medical personnel on base and was transferred to a hospital in the nearby city of Pordenone where Dr. said that her injuries will take about two weeks to heal.

The Air Force office of special investigations (AFOSI) is currently investigating.
