Soldier found mortally wounded in northeast Raleigh shooting

RALEIGH,NC- A man found shot early Wednesday on Raven Road in northeast Raleigh died of his injuries, and police have ruled the case a homicide and are trying to identify who did it.

Spc. Jose Juan Melendez, Jr., 31, was found wounded and was taken to WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh, but he died there, a statement from police said. Police identified him Wednesday afternoon.

Residents of Breezewood Condominiums called 911 about possible gunshots heard in the area around 3:20 a.m.

“We were laying in bed sleeping and we heard, my husband heard, four shots,” said resident Ashley Becker.

Police responded to the scene and circled the area before finding Jose Juan Melendez Jr., 31, shot in the parking lot at 2200 Raven Road, police said.

Becker said she hoped the noise she heard was firecrackers, but when police arrived on scene, reality set it.

“My stomach just sunk and I was like, ‘No way!’ I mean, this is a safe community. We just bought this condo in April thinking it was a great place to live,” she said.

The man was transported to WakeMed with a gunshot wound to the face but did not survive his injuries, according to police.

A 911 caller reported seeing someone running into the woods after the shooting.

Neighbors like Quante White described a quiet, family-friendly community.

“I came out and one of my neighbors said, ‘Well, somebody got killed.’ I’m like, ‘Wow,’” she said. “It’s shocking for this neighborhood something like that. And to know that it’s that close.”

White, who’s a parent, has been left to answer tough questions.

“As a parent, you really don’t want to lie to your child, but you don’t want to tell them that either. So, it puts us in a bad situation, especially not knowing anything.”

Becker is a new parent with a baby and she said she’s lost a sense of security.

“I walk him every single day up and down that road. It’s terrifying. It’s absolutely terrifying. I’m out here every single day and I felt safe up until today,” she said.

Police said there’s no suspect or vehicle description available at this time. Officers canvassed the area following the shooting.
